KERALA SAHITYA ACADEMY AWARD FOR
PROF. DR. K. RAJASEKHARAN NAIR, MD, FRCP, DM
Kerala Sahitya Academy has bestowed the Malayalam Literary Award 2014 to Prof. K. Rajasekharan Nair, Former Director-Professor of Neurology, Medical College, Trivandrum for his 8th Malayalam publication titled 'Samsmruthi' (സംസ്മൃതി) published by DC Books, Kottayam. This award is for the 'Malayalam Vaijnanika Sahityam'. This is the first time Kerala Sahitya Academy is awarding a medical doctor for his contribution to Malayalam Literature.
Dr. Nair had his undergraduate and first postgraduate medical education in Trivandrum Medical College. His further training was in AIIMS, New Delhi and at different hospitals in UK. He started the Departments of Neurology at Medical College, Calicut (1973) and at the University of Garyounis in Libya. He upgraded the Dept. of Neurology of Trivandrum Medical College to a postgraduate training centre and he started the first DM Course in Neurology under the Directorate of Medical Education in Kerala. He has published 135 research papers in different national and international medical journals and has published 9 Neurology text books. He was an examiner for DM Neurology and Dip NB Neurology from 1982-97 and a visiting Professor of Neurology in many Indian and foreign Universities. He was elected as the President of all three national organizations of Neurology in India – Neurological Society of India, Indian Academy of Neurology, and Indian Epilepsy Association. 'Best Doctor Award' was given to him by the Government of Kerala in 1998.
He is a voracious reader in English, Malayalam and Sanskrit and much sought after orator. Among the prestigious orations he made are Sarabhai Oration (Association of Physicians of India Katmandu, 1996), Rhone Poulanc Oration of the Geriatric Society of India, Historical Oration on Charcot at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Vaidyaratnam PS Warrier Oration of Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Salai, 2007, etc. He has published many scientific articles in Malayalam and all of them attracted the attention of the reading public of Kerala. His first Malayalam novel (Oru Puzhayude Katha, Current Books, 1979) was the first ever publication in Malayalam on an environmental issue. All his publications became greatly sought after books (Rogangalum Sargatmakathayum, DC Books) included in the Best 5 Books published in 2005 – Malayala Manorama, 'Vaidyavum Samoohavum' ( DC Books) included in the Best 3 Books published in Malayalam in 2007, Oorkanundu Kure Ormakal (Mathrubhoomi 2012), Kure Arivukal, Anubhoothikal and Anubhavangal (DC Books 2014). His latest book ‘Njan Thanne Sakshi’ will be published in Jan. 2015 by DC Books.
His book 'SAMSMRUTHI' analyses the inner meaning of the concepts of life and death and highlights the pioneers of Medicine in this part of the World. It is the first time an alumnus of Trivandrum Medical College is getting this much of wide literary attention.
